vhils (portugal)

Vhils, whose real name is Alexandre Farto, is a Portuguese artist from the Lisbon region, born in 1987. He studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martin College of Art and Design in London.

In 2008, he exhibited one of his works, « Scratching Surface, » alongside Banksy at the Cans Festival in London. This exhibition brought him international recognition when their artworks were featured on the front page of The Times newspaper. His creations are portraits of anonymous individuals carved into abandoned walls, offering a new perspective on neglected urban landscapes.

This approach emphasizes the poetry of his work and reflects on the artist’s role as a connector between the city and its inhabitants. Vhils employs various techniques beyond just using a jackhammer, including acid, explosives, screen printing, or sculpting polystyrene blocks. In 2010, he collaborated with JR on a massive mural in Los Angeles. Vhils is now considered one of the greatest street art artists of his generation.
