Sandra Chevrier (1983) is a contemporary Canadian artist known for her captivating collage portraits of women in the series « The Cages. »
Sandra Chevrier earned her Bachelor’s degree in Visual and Media Arts from UQAM – Université du Québec à Montréal. As a self-taught artist, Sandra fell in love with art as a child, expressing her emotions through pencil drawing. In the beginning, she drew sketches of eyes all the time. This initial passion is very visible in her current work. Sandra likes to describe herself as a « collector of gazes » because she believes that you can read all the emotions of a human being just by looking into their eyes.
The works in the series « The Cages » by Sandra Chevrier are created with a strong message of social freedom and open-mindedness infused into the canvas. The series was born from the fusion of painting and collage, as Chevrier uses both paint and actual cuttings from comic books to produce intense mixed media portraits of women. Sandra used to work in a highly skilled and hyper-realistic manner before discovering collage and mixed media techniques. Now, Chevrier’s work is a blend of fine art and street art that is self-contained and supremely crafted.
The « Cages » series tells the story of women trying to break free from the cages imposed by society’s distorted prejudices and expectations of what a woman should or should not be, of false beauty, and perfection. With vibrant colors and graphic lines, the artist uses loose, heavy paint textures that make her depicted subjects seem to emerge from the surreal world onto the canvas, revealing the underlying tragedy of oppressed feminine identity. By using comic books as masks for her depicted heroines, Chevrier highlights the fragility of the superhero, their personal weaknesses and flaws, and exposes the humanity within the superhuman.
