Invader (French, born in 1969), also known as Space Invader, is an urban artist from Paris.
Starting in the 1970s, he affixed mosaic images of characters from the video game Space Invaders in cities around the world. Each time, Invader records his work as an invasion and creates reference books accompanied by maps to indicate where to find each piece. Invader began his outdoor installations in Paris in 1998 and continued to invade 31 other cities in France, followed by 22 cities across Europe. Invader’s work can also be seen in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Australia.
The mosaics are made from weather-resistant tiles, representing the pixels used for the graphics of early video games and computers. The installation process typically takes at least a week, including scouting, recording, and location mapping. One of the most visible places to spot Invader’s work is the Hollywood sign in California; the first mosaic piece was placed on the D on December 31, 1999. In addition to his mosaics, following the same pixelated model, Invader creates works inspired by the Rubik’s Cube. Since 2000, Invader’s work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, and he gained popularity and recognition after appearing in the street art documentary titled « Exit Through the Gift Shop. »
