Gris1 (born in 1981) is a French artist and a member of Da Mental Vaporz (DMV).
DMV, which stands for « Da Mental Vaporz, » is a French graffiti crew composed of Bom.K, Blo, Brusk, Dran, Gris1, Iso, Jaw, Kan, Sowat, and Lek. It was founded in 1999 by Bom.K and Iso in the suburbs of Paris. Soon joined by Kan, they distinguished themselves by creating massive wall paintings in the southern suburbs, featuring various traditional graffiti subjects (ranging from block letters to cartoon characters).
The works of these artists can stand on their own, each different from the others in terms of environment, style, and technique. However, when presented in a common context, they create an extraordinarily interesting relationship. As implied by the name « Da Mental Vaporz, » which translates to « The Vapors of the Psyche, » the artists aim to raise awareness in viewers about the abyss of the personal psyche. This translates into each member of the collective and leads to a multi-faceted richness of styles.
Observing the walls created by DMV in urban environments, everything is offered to the viewer, from old-school graffiti to Pop Art, Surrealism, abstract expressionism, cubism, and abstraction. As different as these styles may seem, the artists are nevertheless able to bring together a harmonious symbiosis in their commonly created works, which, though marked by tension, remains balanced.
Thus, their works can span tens of meters in height and width, depicting monstrous characters, madness, and the imminent end of times. As a member of the DMV group, Gris1 maintains his passion by creating large murals and collective canvases. He has strengthened the Crew with his expertise in old-school graffiti codes.
