anders gjennestad (norway)

Anders Gjennestad was born in Norway in 1980. He lives and works in Berlin and has been operating in the streets under the pseudonym STRØK since 2001.

Working with multilayer stencils, he favors a subdued color palette, using shades of gray, black, and white. He stands out primarily for his meticulous style, the choice of unusual postures for his characters, and the particular treatment of shadows, all of which seamlessly blend into the city’s concrete. Often depicting men and women in sportswear from above or from behind, he draws with striking realism acrobats, players, walkers, or travelers who often defy the laws of gravity.

Images captured in the moment of real-life experiences that everyone can relate to, Anders Gjennestad’s stencils continue his own reflection on the role of humans in the city. The motifs are based on his own black and white photographs of strangers taken in public spaces. The artist delves deep into questions involving the human figure and the interaction of protagonists with space and surface while exploring the fragmentation of frozen moments of kinetic energy and narratives. This all combines with the tangible textures of the materials he paints, creating a juxtaposition of traces of new and past stories.
