alicia mccarthy (usa)

Alicia McCarthy (1969) lives and works in Oakland, California. Her delicate abstract painting work adopts…

…a punk/folk aesthetic (also known as « urban rustic ») that combines San Francisco’s bohemian street culture with popular art forms. Often produced from abandoned, shared, or recycled materials and tools, Alicia McCarthy’s intimate works are accompanied by texts that allude to her long history in the Street Art community and her central role in the « Mission School, » a group of artists working in San Francisco’s Mission District in the early 1990s. Emerging in the pre-dot.com era in the Bay Area, McCarthy, alongside Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, Ruby Neri, and Barry McGee, embodies the street and graffiti culture associated with this rustic aesthetic. Her work has been featured in numerous institutions, including the Berkeley Art Center, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles.
